Georgia State Championship – Tech Preview

Others have described this game as the one Georgia fans hate to lose the most.  When Tech chalks up a rare win in the rivalry, people you never knew were Tech fans seem to come out of the woodwork.  After the game in 2008, I can say I hated the fact they celebrated a win between the hedges.  Order has been restored the last two years as Mark Richt has run his record to 9-1 against the North Avenue Trade School.

When Tech Has the Ball

As everyone knows, Tech runs the Georgia Southern/service academy option-oriented offense and has given the Georgia defense fits the last three years.  Two years ago in Atlanta, the Dawgs did a pretty good job controlling the Tech running game for most of the game by controlling the dive option with Geno Atkins, Jeff Owens, and Kade Weston.  The Georgia interior line has the same type of players with “Motel 6” Jenkins and Kwame Geathers at the nose with Abry Jones, DeAngelo Tyson, and Garrison Smith at the end positions.  The linebackers are going to be responsible for hitting Tevin Washington over and over again.  If the Dawgs can take away the first two options consistently without committing safeties, I like the Georgia’s chances to get the Tech offense running sideline to sideline where our defensive speed can prevent big plays.

When Georgia Has the Ball

The Georgia offense led by Aaron Murray should have the opportunity to put up points and yards against the Tech defense.  The last two years Georgia has had 100+ yard rushers, and Murray had one of his games in Athens last November against Tech.  The Georgia offense is going to need to put up TDs instead of settling for field goals in the red zone.  If the Georgia offensive line led by Ben Jones can enable the Dawgs to maintain offensive balance, I look for the Bulldogs to put up a lot of points and keep the pressure on the Tech to keep up.

What Will Happen

If Georgia comes in and plays as they did against Auburn, the Dawgs will win easily.  If we come out and play as we did last week against Kentucky, Tech will win their 2nd game in the last 4.  I think Todd Grantham has been preparing for this game all year long and will have his defense ready to play.  Tech will get their rushing yards and will score some points, but the Dawgs will get enough stops to allow the offense to win.

Final Score:  Georgia 38, Tech 28
